To all friends of Jeel al Amal

For the third year Jeel al Amal has been commemorating the end of the school year with the open day celebrations, which give the children the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and show their talents in dance, music and acting.

This year we had decided that everybody at Jeel al Amal should be honoured: the entire staff and all children both from the boarding section and the day school. Whole-heartedly wishing that everybody at the home be honoured we were busy trying to get things together calculating, subtracting and dividing and finally realizing the budget.

Then a great surprise came our way: an angel with her two young nieces phoned offering to donate the gifts for everybody. What a joy! It was such a fantastic evening when a car loaded with gifts stopped by the gate of Jeel al Amal. The sight of the children helping with the unloading of the gifts and racing to bring them to the home was unforgettable. Two wonderful young girls started distributing the gifts, much to the excitement of the children. It felt like the heart of each child bounced with joy with every gift that came out of from the bag. Such a joy and such a fantastic sight to see the smile on each child's face. Again we feel blessed with the friendship of people who believe in our message.

The open day took place on Monday 11th of June. The theme this year focused on the importance of education for a brighter future for everybody. The short skits performed by the children also highlighted health issues and the importance of proper diets.

Some children got to show what they had been practicing throughout the year with their music teacher. The school choir sang beautifully, some songs were from old time and others were traditional Palestinian songs. Some children played the flute while others were accompanied by their music teacher on Arabic drums.

For the first time a group of girls was trained to perform Arabic folklore dancing and that was a great success. Their efforts bore fruit and the audience enjoyed their performance. They really did very well with only a short time of training.

At the end of the celebrations it was time to honour the children who have done very well academically and those who progressed. Others were honoured for sports activities and yet others for their health activities throughout the year.

The look on the children’s faces was, as always, unforgettable. This gives some much pride and makes you feel like they are saying to themselves: “I’m okay and I’m doing well”. One of the honoured children is autistic. Words cannot describe the look on his face when he got his gift with the certificate. He really is a success story because of the progress he has shown since he joined Jeel al Amal.

The school director, Mrs. Rana Faroun, held a speech commemorating the founders of the home, Alice and Basil Sahhar, and the very essence of Jeel al Amal which was born out of faith and love and continues to hold on to those values for the sake of a better future for our children.
Like the heat of the burning sun of that day so was the atmosphere of the open day celebrations.
In all it was a day to remember
