Visit of a very special woman
Najwa sent us an email on March 16th: “Yesterday was a pleasant day for the children. They sang together from the depth of their hearts. The boys enjoyed themselves immensely.

Fabienne van Eck is a very special woman. She noticed a boy who is completely crazy about music. His name is Thaer. He is also a member of the school choir. I will have to think about how I can help him develop his talents. Fabienne will be back for a workshop for the whole school, 350 children in all! Greetings. Najwa.”

Music Workshops in Jeel al Amal
Text and photographs below are duplicated with permission from the blogspot of Fabienne van Eck

Najwa Sahhar-Sayegh, daughter of the founders of Jeel al Amal, invited us to give two music workshops to 65 boys, age 4-14.

When the younger children enter the room, the older ones help them to feel comfortable and to find a chair. It is touching to see how the teenagers care for the little ones.

When everyone has a place, the older boys leave us alone with the kids and we start our activities. We dance, sing, play rhythms with sticks, but most of all.... we laugh! After a full hour we finish the workshop and prepare for the second workshop with the older boys.

We do a different program, adjusted to the age difference. The boys are very creative, making up movements with a song, singing with loud voices and again, laughing a lot.

Zeinab, the other workshop leader, and I drive back through Wadi Nar, the terrible road between Ramallah and Bethlehem. But we don't care. The sun shines, we still hear the laughter of the boys and softly we hum the songs we sang with them. Jeel al-Amal is a wonderful place for these children.

Professional cellist and born story teller
The Dutch cellist Fabienne van Eck lives in Jeruzalem. She frequently visits refugee camps, hospitals, an institute for the blind and schools to bring music into the lives of Palestinian children. This is one of the projects of Musicians without Borders, an organization devoted to transcending peacefully the borders between countries and peoples through making music together. Young Palestinians are being trained to be leaders of music workshops. Together with Fabienne they conduct workshops for thousands of children every year.

On the blog Musicbus goes Palestine Fabienne humorously tells about her encouraging and heartwarming experiences. She reflects on what the situation does with her and seeks answers to the puzzling questions that lie behind.

Absolutely recommended: browse the blog of this professional musician and born story teller and subscribe to receive information on a regular basis through via email. Click here.
