A video of the dancing girls of the kindergarten is on You Tube.

It is the first video made with the camera, that we we were able to buy thanks to our Dutch donors. It was filmed by Abed El Majid (Grade 8) and Jibreel (Grade 6).

‘Learning Disabilities’ Project at Jeel

ADHD: A GIFT FROM GOD
To the friends of Jeel al Amal

Project background
Jeel al Amal cares for and hosts orphan and needy children coming from difficult social backgrounds, subjected to circumstances with no proper education and an unfulfilling environment.













With the increase in number of children needing this kind of intervention Jeel al Amal administration with the help of Faisal Husseini Foundation executed the program of ‘Learning disabilities’. See Jeel News January 2013.



On two levels
Professor Jawad Dweik executed the training on two levels.

1- Level one (theoretical) tackled the humanitarian aspect of the teachers towards the children with learning difficulties.
 
2- The second level (practical training) focused on the strategies, intervention and testing.



The teachers became convinced
Through the training the teachers became convinced that:

1 every person can learn;

2 disability, ADHD, is a gift from God and is not an impediment to development and discovery;

3 lots of creative professionals and celebrities had learning disabilities;

4 psychological balance is a key point to make a change in life and overcome obstacles.



Workshop and exhibition
The Grand finale of the project was a workshop and an exhibition of educational material  that the teachers used as tools to boost the children’s learning abilities.

The title of the Exhibition was: ‘Despite my difficulties, I can accomplish my ambitions – YES I CAN’.



Seven corners
The exhibition consisted of corners according to the children’s specific disability.

1- So that we remember corner
Gives insight and proper tools with guidelines for the children who forget. These tools can be used during tests.

2- My language my treasure corner
Allows the child to express freely his thoughts and enrich his vocabulary.

3- Hand by hand corner
Helps the children organize and be part of the process.

4- Play and learn corner
Through educational games and learning through play the child is motivated to learn and breaks the routine. See Jeel News April 2014.

5- Reading and writing corner
Things do not stop only at reading and writing, the child with learning disability can do a lot more with content and skills.

6- Be optimistic corner
Successful teacher stress the positive aspects of the child and at the same time help the shy and psychologically damaged children overcome their anxiety and boost their self esteem.

7- Success Stories corner
Each child with learning disability has a pathetic story behind him where you can write a book about. This is the main reason for his disability. At the same time they are able to overcome this with the right intervention.

Rami, one of the students with learning disability, says: “I now love school. I am doing much better and feel that my teachers care about me and I can succeed.”



Teachers views
- We now have the proper tools to deal with the children.

- The training has enabled me to first be a mother first to those children and then a teacher.

- I started looking at children with learning disabilities from another aspect. Their success was my success.



Other school attended the exposition
Schools from Jerusalem and West Bank attended the exhibition to learn from the experience of Jeel al Amal. The teachers had the occasion to explain their views and answer questions.

That was quite an experience for each and every one of them: for the first time they had to face such a crowd of professionals and school teachers, take the microphones and take the lead.
















A word from the organizers
Jeel al Amal administration and staff were applauded for their commitment and dedication in bringing about such a change.

They put in a lot of effort after school hours and their commitment was not seen in any other school they have cooperated with. This was publicly announced, which makes us really proud.
