To all friends of Jeel al Amal

In 1972 Basil Sahhar, together with Alice, made a drawing of two boys working together. They carry an open book on a lectern. But it is also a torch with a flame and a brilliant shining sun. On an elegant band you see: “Jeel al Amal” in Arabic and English.

There is more text on it. You can decipher the year: 1972. In that year Basil and Alice left Jerusalem with their children. They went to live in Bethany. In an adjacent house they started Jeel al Amal: a home and school for twenty homeless boys. Within one year they were one hundred.

This drawing makes the dream of Jeel al Amal visible and was therefore used as logo ever since. But a logo should be clear at a glance, and the many details made this impossible. Without all these details, the heart of the logo comes across much better. Therefore this new version was accepted by the board as the logo of Jeel al Amal.

In this logo you can see the inspiration of Basil: “A good education is the best weapon”.  And you feel the passion of Alice, that boys will grow up into mature people with an open mind who, in cooperation with others, can develop all their talents.

The logo shows Jeel al Amal as a warm and loving nest, where a new generation grows up, full of hope for a future in which people may live together in peace.
