To all friends of Jeel al Amal

On the 17th of December “The Friends of Jeel al Amal Society” held a Christmas dinner at the Greek Orthodox Club in Ramallah. The aim was to collect money for the Jeel al Amal school, so that the salaries of the staff and some of the bills of the last two months could be paid.

The local community responded with enthusiasm. There were 190 cards sold for 120 Shekels a piece (almost €22). And in spite of the bad weather, there were over hundred guests. During the dinner they enjoyed a lively program.

A choir from Beit Sahour, to the East of Bethlehem, opened the evening with Christmas carols. Their heavenly voices filled the hall with a warm and festive atmosphere, which the guests greatly appreciated. The choir offered their performance and their travel expenses were also paid for them. After that, the undersigned told the guests about the history of Jeel al Amal, and the care which the school gives to the children and orphans.

After the dinner the young people celebrated joyfully by dancing to the music of a DJ, who had a mix of the most popular dance songs. During the breaks between the dance sessions a lottery was held. Seventeen gifts were made available by merchants in Jerusalem and Ramallah. The main prize was a trip for two persons to Sharm al-Sheikh in Egypt. It was donated by a travel agency in Jerusalem.

There were some leading religious and political figures present, along with many others who came to support Jeel a Amal’s noble aim of providing essential services to the community.

“The friends of Jeel al Amal Society” intend to hold this kind of events on a regular  basis during the major Christian and Muslim feasts in the course of the year. If this becomes tradition, Jeel al Amal will become well known within and supported by the community.

In addition, I like to wish all our friends a happy and prosperous 2010.
